Are you in the market for a new laptop case? If so, you may be overwhelmed by the number of options you have to choose from. It’s not just a matter of finding a case that looks good though. You need to find one that can function the way you need it to. Here are the top five features to look for in a laptop case so you can make the right purchase from the start.
1 – Size
Shoot for the Goldilocks effect here – nothing too big or too small. Measure your laptop’s length, height, and diagonal screen size to determine how big of a laptop case you need. The diagonal measurement is typically considered the “size” of your laptop, much like a 46″ TV is one that measures 46 inches from one corner to another. The depth of your laptop should not matter much, as most cases will be thick enough to support varying thicknesses.
2 – Shape
This partly plays into the size of the laptop as well. Most laptops are fairly rectangular, but some netbooks and old-school laptops are made to look more like a square. If you have a square-shaped laptop, you obviously need a case that will hold that. You may not find a case made specifically for your laptop shape, but you need to make sure the measurements will hold up in the end.
3 – Storage Compartments
Think about all of the things you need to carry with you when you tote your laptop around. You need to have storage compartments for all of that. At the very least, you need a place to put your laptop charging cable. However, you may also want pockets for software, headphones, external hard drives, and anything else you may need along the way.
4 – Security
Of course, you want a laptop case that has some sort of security feature. A basic zipper or Velcro strap won’t do the trick, especially if you are bringing your laptop with you in public. Ideally, you need a laptop case that has a locking mechanism, or an option to put a padlock on it somehow. This might be something as simple as a hole near the zipper closing so you can loop a lock through the zipper and the case itself. This may not stop someone from stealing the case entirely, but it may deter thieves long enough for you to take action.
5 – Carrying Straps
Finally, you need to think about how you will carry your laptop around with you. If you have a heavy laptop, you may want a backpack-style carrying case so you can strap it to your back. You may also want a case with a long strap that you can place across your chest. For small, lightweight laptops, briefcase-style cases may be a better fit.
Combine all of these features together, and you should be able to find the perfect laptop case for you.
