About the School:

The University of California, Berkeley is a public research university in Berkeley, California. Founded in 1868, it is the flagship campus and the oldest of the ten campuses of the University of California.

Laptop Programs:

Library Laptop Lending

The Library Laptop lending program(link is external) is available to UC Berkeley students with a valid Cal ID.
  • 13" Apple Macbook Air laptops (some can also run Windows) are available for checkout
  • Loan periods range from 4 hours to 14 days and vary by location (see website)
  • Students must be in good standing (no fines, overdue items, or blocks) in order to be eligible
  • Check equipment availability and make reservations on OskiCat(link is external)
Android and Apple USB wall chargers with cables are also available for check-out(link is external) at the Moffitt and Engineering Library Circulation Desks.

Semester Chromebook Loans for Foundations in Data Science Students

Students enrolled in Foundations of Data Science (CS / Info / Statistics C8) or connector courses at Berkeley can now borrow laptop computers from the Library for the entire semester. Visit Berkeley Data Science(link is external) for more information.

iClicker Loans for EOP Students

EOP Students in need of an iClicker for summer classes can apply(link is external) to borrow one free of charge.

Electronic Devices Lending Policy


  • Patrons must complete the Electronic Agreement Form prior to the first checkout of any laptop.
  • 1 electronic device (with no peripherals) per person.
  • Devices are available on a first come, first served basis.
  • 14 day laptops are holdable/reservable through OskiCat with keyword 'Dell Latitude' or 'Macbook Air' and then pressing the 'Request' tab.
  • Upon check-out and check-in, the device will be examined with the patron to ensure all parts are operational.
  • Device must be returned in person at due time, or at the latest, 1 hour before closing.
  • Any stored data or information will be erased after the item is returned.


    • The library lends Apple MacBook Air 13" and Dell Latitude 13" laptops, and some accessories.

    • Laptops may be borrowed from:
    • Laptop loan periods:
      • 4-hour loans: Engineering Library, Moffitt Library
      • 1-day loans: Bioscience Library, Social Research Library
      • 14-day loans: Moffitt Library, Social Research Library
    • UC Berkeley Students with a valid Cal ID (and select yellow library card holders) may borrow a device for use anywhere.
    • Eligible students must be in good standing with the Library (no fines, no overdue items, and no blocks).
    • Students have full administrative privileges restricted by Deep Freeze.
      • Library devices use Deep Freeze to restrict data from being saved to the hard drive.
      • Users are responsible for saving to cloud-based services or to an external drive.
    • You can check their availability in OskiCat:
    • There are Android and Apple Lightning USB wall chargers with cables available for check-out to UC Berkeley students at Moffitt Library (4th floor) and the Engineering Library Circulation Desk.
      • The loan period is two hours with no renewal or overnight.
      • Students must present their Cal1 ID card to borrow.
    • The Library Laptop Lending program is funded by the Berkeley Student Technology Fund.


      No login is required to access the computer. However, you will need a CalNet ID/passphrase to access the wireless internet connection (Airbears2).

      Fines and Charges

      Borrowers are responsible for loss, damage, and theft of the laptop while in their possession. Borrowers should verify the condition of the laptop at the time of check-out and upon check-in. See the Pay fines page for replacement and overdue charges.


      Some laptops run only the Windows Operating System while other laptops run just OSX.MAC OSX - Sierra
