Laptop Programs:

Technology plays a significant role in many aspects of a student's life at DePauw. As such, DePauw expects all students to have a laptop computer to use in their coursework. Students find that having a personal laptop is invaluable for accessing online course materials, performing research, taking notes, completing coursework, and communicating with friends and family. In addition, because faculty members assume that each student owns a laptop, some instructors incorporate using a laptop into course assignments and sometimes require students to bring a laptop to class.

SUGGESTED SYSTEMS

Both Apple and Windows based laptops will work fine at DePauw. No matter which platform you choose, you’ll want a computer that is no more than one or two years old so that it can run the latest software and serve you well during your four years at DePauw. Apple and Dell offer discounted pricing to DePauw students via their on-line stores. You can find links on our vendor page.  

HARDWARE RECOMMENDATIONS

Information Services provides general recommendations and minimum configuration for laptop computers based on our network requirements and software compatibility.

SOFTWARE

All students should have a recent copy of Microsoft Office. Students are able to download a full version of Microsoft Office at no cost. Learn more about this offer at Software Requirements.   The following links are for their online stores.

Recommended Warranties and Accidental Damage Protection We strongly recommend purchasing an extended manufacturer’s warranty and an accidental damage protection plan. Warranties are a good way to ensure the reliability of the computer through your four year career at DePauw. Accidental damage protection covers drops and spills, which most standard warranties do not cover.  

MICROSOFT OFFICE

Before you arrive on campus, you should download the current version of Microsoft Office onto your computer. As part of our contractual agreement with Microsoft, we are able to provide Microsoft Office to every student free of charge. As long as you are a student at DePauw, you’ll be able to use this software for free. To install your free copy of Microsoft Office:
  • Go to www.office.com/getOffice365
  • At the prompt, enter your DePauw email address
  • Follow the instructions in the email that you receive

OTHER SOFTWARE

ANTIVIRUS

As a DePauw student, you are entitled to a free copy of Symantec EndPoint Protection. This is the University licensed antivirus / anti-malware software. The software and updates are free while you are a student at DePauw. Review the Securing Devices article on the IT KnowledgeBase for step-by-step instructions on installing Symantec on your computer.

CURRICULAR SOFTWARE

Specific curricular software may be required for some classes. Information about this software, which is available as a free download or for a minimal charge, may be found on the IT KnowledgeBase Instructional Support & Software article.

WINDOWS ON A MAC

In limited circumstances, Mac users may have to run software that is only available for the Windows operating system. If required for a class, these students will be provided a means to run the software in a virtual environment via our network.

NETWORK DRIVES

You will need to set up your computer so you can gain access to class files shared on network drives and network printers. Browse to the IT KnowledgeBase Network: Learn About the Network article for step-by-step instructions on connecting to network drives.

PRINTING

You will need to set up your computer to print to the campus network printers. Browse to the IT KnowledgeBase Printing article for step-by-step instructions on how you can print to DePauw's Canon printer/copiers.

LAPTOP SUPPORT

If you are a DePauw student and need assistance with your laptop, please contact the DePauw HelpDesk at [email protected], (765) 658-4294, or stop by our office on the lower level of the Union Building. The HelpDesk staff offers assistance with software installs and virus removal; however, we are not authorized to service or repair laptops. The following information should help you determine the best way to have your laptop serviced.

APPLE LAPTOPS

WARRANTY REPAIRS

  • Apple laptops come with a one year warranty. AppleCare is an optional add-on purchase that extends the standard warranty to three years.
  • Accidental damage is not covered under the Apple warranty nor AppleCare, but it is worth checking with Apple as they will sometimes allow repairs for some types of accidents.
  • Warranty repairs must be done at an Apple Authorized Service Center. Nearby options include:
    • The Apple Store at the Fashion Mall at Keystone in Indianapolis is the nearest Apple Store to Greencastle.
    • The MacExperience is an authorized Apple Service Provider located in Bloomington, Indiana.
    • Best Buy stores that have “Geek Squad” services are authorized for Apple repairs.  The Best Buy in Avon, Indiana, has a Geek Squad and can do Apple repairs. Call (317) 271-5690 or schedule an appointment at www.bestbuy.com.
    • Call Apple directly at 800-APL-CARE.

OUT-OF-WARRANTY REPAIRS

  • ANY OF THE ABOVE SOURCES WILL DO OUT-OF-WARRANTY REPAIRS FOR A FEE.

  • You can check your Service and Support coverage by entering the serial number from your Mac at the Apple Check Coverage website.

WARRANTY REPAIRS

  • Call Hewlett Packard as these systems typically come with on-site warranty repair.
  • Accidental damage may be included in your warranty.
