How to Clean a Computer Keyboard
The keyboard for your computer can be a death trap for every crumb, hair, dust bunny, and germ surrounding you while you work. Considering how often you probably use your computer, it would be a good idea to clean out your keyboard every once in a while. The keyboard cleaning tips below will help you get rid of the crumbs, disinfect the germs, and create a clean environment for work and entertainment.
Use Canned Air to Clean Underneath the Keys
Canned air is exactly what it sounds like: air in a can. More specifically, it is a can of pressurized air that you can use to get behind keyboard keys and other hard to reach places. Canned air usually cost about $5 a can, and it can be used for a variety of cleaning purposes. In this case, all you have to do is insert a thin straw provided with the can into the nozzle, and squirt it in quick jets behind your keys.
It is best to do this when your laptop or keyboard is vertical so all the dust can fall towards the floor. You should be able to get most of the crumbs and hair behind the keyboard this way.
Use Tweezers to Pull out Bigger Debris
You may find that some dust and hair balls will not come out with canned air alone. In this case, use a pair of tweezers to get the larger items out from underneath your keys. You may also want to use a toothpick or a cotton swab to get behind certain areas, depending on how your keys are setup.
Clean the Surface with Disinfecting Wipes
To get the germs off the surface of your keyboard, you can use Lysol or Clorox disinfecting wipes. As an alternative, you could put hand sanitizer on a paper towel and wipe down the keys that way. You can also buy keyboard cleaning wipes from electronics stores if you want to, but in the end, they will do the same thing as a standard disinfecting wipe.
Clean Regularly to Minimize Maintenance
If you want to avoid having a major cleaning session for your keyboard every time, try to keep up with your cleaning once a week. This may be as simple as spraying down behind the keys real quick and wiping down the surface with a disinfecting wipe. If you are sick, make sure that you wipe off the keyboard more often than normal to get rid of the germs. Do all of this and your keyboard will stay as clean as possible!
