computer-speed.jpgSlow computer speeds are common and frustrating, and in some cases, they aren’t avoidable. If you have an old or insufficient computer, you might not get the response times you’re looking for. Nevertheless, there are some things you can do to improve your computer speeds and get through more work along the way. Here are five easy ways to make your computer run faster.

Check for Updates

In a lot of cases, a computer is running slowly because it’s simply not up to date. Even if your computer is set to automatically update, you need to run a check for updates to be sure that it has been updating the way it is supposed to. ¬†On a Windows computer, this is in the “Systems and Security” area of your Control Panel. Be sure to click on “check for updates” on the left side, even if the computer says it is fully up to date. That will rescan for updates and potentially show you programs that need improvement.

Clean off Unnecessary Files

Every few months, take some time to clean and organize the files on your computer. If you download a lot of media files, you may need to do this more often than that. Delete any files you no longer want or need on your computer, or transfer them to an external hard drive. Empty your recycle bin to keep your computer as clean as possible. The less it has to store, the better it will run.

Clear out Your Unused Registry Files, Internet Caches, and Other Background Files

You can download a free program called CCleaner to help you clear out files on your computer you might not even know are there. Unused registry files, empty folders, internet caches, and more can weigh down your computer over time. There are tons of different settings to play around with on here, but the defaults should be sufficient. Run the main cleaner and the registry cleaner to clear as much out of your computer as possible.

Don’t Try to Do Too Much at Once

Your computer may not be strong enough to handle Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, and internet scrabble all at the same time. If you notice that your computer is running slow when you multi-task, scale back to just one or two programs at a time. That’s a little frustrating to do in the modern world, but you have to know what your machine is capable of.

Restart Your Computer

As simple as it sounds, sometimes all your computer needs is a reboot to run faster. If you have not done a full shut down on your computer in a while, turn it off and let it sit for a minute before you turn it back on. If you increase your computer speeds as a result, great! If not, try some of the other suggestions above to see what you need to do. There are a ton of different reasons why your computer may be running slowly, but with a combination of these ideas, you should be able to make it run a little smoother.
